Why am I getting different plans from different dentists? Is it all a scam?
This is one of the most common — and most understandable — sources of distrust in dentistry, so let's be straight about it. Most of the time, the difference doesn't mean one dentist is honest and the other isn't. It means they have different treatment philosophies, both operating fully within the bounds of ethics and the law. A more conservative dentist might watch a small, early cavity and choose to monitor it in hopes of reversal with improved oral hygiene. A more proactive dentist might treat that same spot now, often because they've repeatedly watched small lesions grow into large ones requiring far bigger restorations, so they've learned to intervene earlier. Neither approach is "wrong." They're two reasonable judgment calls shaped by each dentist's training and experience. What matters is how well the restoration was completed, taking into consideration the patient’s risks, and how well the patient was cared for throughout the process.
Dentistry has genuine gray zones where reasonable experts disagree—whether it’s deciding when to crown a tooth, when to do a filling vs watch, when to save vs extract, etc. What matters far more than getting identical numbers from every dentist is finding one that makes you feel comfortable — someone who explains their reasoning, shows you what they're seeing, and clearly wants to set you up for long-term success rather than just treating what's in front of them today. Getting a different second opinion isn't a sign that someone's lying. It's often just a second philosophy.
